Days 204 & 205 – Tuesday 13th & Wednesday 14th December 2016

Letting the weather dictate what we get up to…
It’s hard to plan too far in advance out here, but that’s probably a good thing as the weather is so unpredicatable! In the end we just waited to see what the weather was like before making up our minds.

Day 204 – Tuesday 13th December 2016
We started today with a quick stop at Dingo Beach and then Hydeaway Bay, which would have both been beautiful had it not been for the Big black cloud overhead. From there we drove for just over two hours as far as Mackay which is when the torrential rain started.
Although the weather stopped us from doing much in Mackay, we made the best of a bad situation and decided to spend the rest of the day driving, because it’s hardly a day wasted if it’s pouring down with rain anyway is it?
It took us nearly five hours to reach Rockhampton where we spent the night, after successfully negotiating the price of a four bedroom cabin down to $100 from $130 because it was so late. For dinner we had the schnitzel special, which cost just $7 instead of the usual $28, and although it wasn’t the most exciting day we managed to make up lot of time on the road, which we can hopefully use to our advantage in days to come!

Day 205 – Thursday 15th December 2015
This morning we changed our master plan and went for a different approach, which involved waking up at 07:00 and hitting the road by 08:00. Okay so it was a little bit tiring, but meant that we were able to fit in nearly four hours worth of driving before lunch, and then had the rest of our day to enjoy ourselves. Thankfully the weather had really cleared up, and there was barely a cloud in the sky by the time we reached Hervey Bay to stop and eat.
We had lunch at Enzo’s Cafe, then I went on the hunt for cheap accommodation while the others stayed on the beach relaxing. It wasn’t my best performance, but I managed to bag a -10% discount on a four person private room at a place called Buzers where they have free unlimited Wi-Fi, a decent swimming pool and a secure car park out back. It felt only to reward myself with some time on the beach with Jake throwing the ball around after that:

After a while at the beach we headed back to the pool where we stayed until dinner time:

Then after eating we headed down to the beach for a walk to try and spot some turtles, which completely failed, but at least everything looked pretty as the sun was going down:

I guess all of our turtle luck was used up at The Great Barrier Reef eh?
