Day 264 – Friday 10th February 2017

Back to square one…
Let’s just get this post out of the way and stop wasting your time shall we?
Today we had to check out at 12:00 and then kill six hours before being picked up at 18:00 for our overnight bus ride back to Yangon.
Wasting time was easy – we had lunch, sat for a while, done a bit of reading and a bit of writing, then had dinner. In fact it was quite nice to just chill out for a while, but that’s not particularly interesting for you to read about is it?
At 19:00 (an hour late) a tuk tuk arrived to take us to the bus station, then proceeded to pick up another fourteen others on the way. All sixteen of us squished into what I’d say was enough space for a maximum of twelve, but that didn’t phase the locals, who were still happy to hang from the back or the side if it meant catching a short ride for free.
It took us half an hour to get to the bus station and at first our bus only had about five people on it which gave hope of sleeping, but then all hell broke loose. We stopped somewhere along the way, at another bus station, where locals started pushing, shoving and scrambling their way through each other to reach the bus. Then, when they’d finally filled the bus up and we were on our way,  half of them started to vomit. I’m not exaggerating for the purpose of the story either – at least ten people on our bus were being sick. In plastic bags, on the floor, everywhere. It was disgusting!
Somehow I managed to block out the noise and smell and fall asleep, but poor Abbie had no chance. What a way to end the day!

  1. Yak, didn’t seem right to press the like button after just having crossed the Atlantic on a complimentary upgrade to First….well, what counts is to arrive safely, isn’t it?
