Our first two days in Thailand…
It’s not always easy getting settled in a new country, but after averaging one country a week for the last month you’d think we’d be used to it by now wouldn’t you?
Day 271 – Friday 17th February 2017
This morning we had to actually go somewhere for breakfast as they didn’t serve anything at our guesthouse, which was actually quite nice in a way because it meant that we had more than just plain toast and cereal to chose from. We found a nice bakery, had ourselves a decent bite to eat, then started thinking about what to do with our day.
It turns out that there’s not actually much to do in Krabi, it’s just a really convenient place to visit, almost a midpoint between Malaysia and Phuket if you like. Still, we went for a wander as always, and found two of the most popular landmarks in town – a giant pu dam (mud crab) statue, and Wat Kaew Govaram temple:
We were running out of options by early afternoon so tried to book an overnight minibus to Phuket, only to find that there weren’t any available. Typical. Instead we booked one for the morning and spent the rest of the day looking for accommodation and things to do for days to come.
That’s about it for today. It was a slow day, but a very productive one too.
Day 272 – Saturday 18th February 2017
We were told that the minivan to Phuket should take around three hours, so after being picked up at 11:00 we expected to arrive at around 14:00. What a joke. Five hours later we were stuck in stand still traffic about a kilometer away from Pantong Beach bus stop. Our only saving grace was air conditioning, and without that I think I’d have lost the plot.
Based upon first impressions I’d say that Phuket in general, but Patong Beach specifically, is an exceptionally touristy place. Around every corner is a pub, club, tattoo shop or ping pong show (which I always knew about, but didn’t quite believe we’re real).
We had a nice seafood dinner then booked a day trip to Koh Phi Phi Island for tomorrow, which Abbie (that’s right, not me, but Abbie) negotiated the price down from 3,500฿ per person to just 3,000฿ in total for us both, a saving of over 50%!
It probably would’ve been sensible to get an early night ahead of tomorrow but we were too excited and that just didn’t happen. That’s the only problem with having so much to look forward to – the anticipation definitely gets the better of us sometimes!
