A whole load of waiting around…
Either there’s no such thing as a day bus in India, or we just haven’t come across any, because our bus wasn’t until 20:30 this evening and that meant another day of pretty much noting.
We had to check out at midday which gave us time to actually chill out in the morning, unlike other places where they want you up and out by 10:00, which is (in my opinion) pretty unreasonable.
After spending quite some time in the lobby getting future accommodation sorted while we had the chance we took a tuk tuk to Paulo Travels in Hospet, where we arrived nearly five hours before our bus was due. You’re probably wondering why we arrived so early, but our plan was fool proof – opposite Paulo Travels is Hotel Priyadarshini, where they have free Wi-Fi, a bar and a restaurant. Surely if we spent money at the restaurant on lunch, then at the bar on drinks, they would let us sit in their lobby and use their Wi-Fi, right?
We had lunch at the restaurant, then drinks at the bar (and made it very clear that we’d been spending money on their property before we sat in the lobby and asked for the Wi-Fi password) but then a member of staff asked us to leave. Our fool proof plan stumbled at the last hurdle and left us stuck with all of our bags in an unknown area and over four hours left to wait for our bus.
Our options were limited so in the end we waited it out in the Paulo Travels ticket office, where they had no air conditioning and an almost useless ceiling fan, but it was bearable. At the end of the day, at least we actually had chairs to sit on. It could’ve been a lot worse I guess!
Paulo Travels, who we also used from Anjuna to Hampi (Abbie missed that bit out didn’t she?) operate sleeper buses with double or beds, which aren’t long enough for us to lay down and don’t come with sheets, but are more comfortable to sleep on that regular (seater) buses. Ours eventually arrived at 21:30 (a whole hour late) but that didn’t even come as a surprise to be honest – luck definitely wasn’t on our side today!
